Parts can be used in a wide range of applications such as conceptual modeling and prototyping, functional testing or producing manufacturing tools and end-use parts. These machines use a variety of production-grade thermoplastics to manufacture Real Parts™ direct from digital data. Thermoplastics are environmentally stable, so overall shape and part accuracy don’t change with ambient conditions over time, unlike the resins and powders in competitive processes. Materials are easy to change on Dimension and Fortus systems, with no mess or complicated processes. When combined with the Dimension and Fortus systems, thermoplastics give you production quality thermoplastic parts that are ideal for concept modeling, functional prototyping, manufacturing tools, or end-use parts.

How durable is ABS?

Unlike appearance prototypes produced in weak materials, Dimension parts built in ABS or ABS Plus (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) have been used for functional and field tests - from wind tunnel testing to camera mounts on a M2 Bradley tank and a spray gun running at 60 psi.

Is post-processing required?

Once a model is removed from the build chamber, simply remove the model from the build foundation and break away(BST Systems) or dissolve (SST Systems) any support structures. No further post-processing is required and the model will retain its shape andaccuracy indefinitely. ABS parts can be sanded, milled, drilled, tapped, painted and even electro-plated.

Are colored materials available?

Yes. ABSplus is available in natural, dark gray, red, blue, nectarine, fluorescent yellow, olive green and white. Custom colors can also be ordered. ABSplus in Ivory is available for the uPrint 3D Printer.
